Abstract
Carbon fiber composites have been used in the automotive industry for a variety of applications such as hoods and fenders in order to enable extensive light-weighting. Carbon fiber composites can typically provide some 60% mass savings over conventional steel. However, the high price increase makes the wide usage of these composites very challenging. In this talk, the contributing factors such as tooling and molding selections are discussed, and an example to productionizing composites is presented.
Dr. Hamid Kia, Lab Group Manager for Polymer Composites at GM R&D, received his PhD from Cambridge University in England in 1979, and is the author of more than 50 published papers and has over 40 patents in his name. In 1993 He brought together a team of experts and with their help published the book of SMC Science and Technology. At USCAR, he served as the chair of the Board of Directors of the Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC) and on the board of the Materials Tech Team (MTT).
His research activities has covered many polymer composite related areas such as:
Mathematical modeling of surface deformation of glass fiber reinforced composites.
Methods for improving surface appearance of composites
Lightweight compression moldable composites.
Lightweight injection moldable composites.
Open tool molding of composites.
Managed the composite team for a major GM internal innovation program
Was the Chief scientist for the implementation of composite intensive vehicles in Asia
Leads the implementation of carbon fiber composites at GM
